Liberation vs. occupation

Liberation vs. occupation
: The proof that our action in liberation will be the trial of Saddam Hussein at the hands of his own people.

Imagine if we had captured Adolf Hitler (a novel I’ll never get around to writing). He would have been tried and likely executed by the victorious armies. There never would have been a moment’s thought of letting his own people do it; they were the perpetrators and the losers.

In this war, we see the Iraqi people as the victims of this tyrant and so it is their right to judge their past and build their future.

We have liberated them for that future.

    Ditto.
I very much want to see Saddam tried in Iraq, by Iraqis. The US can always extradite what’s left of him and try him later, if we want, but the New Iraq should get first dibs.

Jeff, I don’t know what you’re trying to get at with these comments. I sat through the entire Nuremberg proceedings although I was a young child at the time. I followed them (assiduously!) mostly on the kitchen table radio supplemented by photos, etc.
Field Marshal Goering was up there and dueled with Justice Jackson. We know what happened to almost all the major figures from that regime including Himmler.
For your information, (young Germans, please don’t jump on this!) for the purpose mostly of national reconciliation, the U.S. released a meme that ‘explained’ that Germany and the German people had been ‘victimized’ by Hitler and the Nazis, but now they have been ‘liberated’ by the Allies. Even so, there were complaints and criticisms about the Nazi figures being prosecuted by the Allies. It was also very difficult to find German lawyers willing to defend these men because most of the German lawyers didn’t want to be associated with them.

Yes, and I suppose U.N. sanctions pushed on Iraq by the U.S. had nothing to do with keeping the Iraqi’s from overthrowing Saddam themselves?
Your writing is another classic example of hackism.

What are you trying to say in contrasting Iraq with Germany? That we invaded the latter to occupy it?
I dare say if Saddam had declared war on the U.S. with the widespread domestic support that Hitler had, we wouldn’t be acting in this manner. But in the present case neither happened.
