It’s beginning to…

tree2003.jpgIt’s beginning to…
: A few days ago, as I was walking down Sixth Avenue, I heard somebody whistling “Silver Bells.” Who could that be? I turned around. Of course, it was no one else than the guy up on a cherrypicker hanging lights on the naked trees in front of CBS Black Rock. A man who knows his mission.

: Today, I ended up at Rockefeller Center. And there she is, The Tree. Workmen were climbing up scaffolding, putting the big lower branches back onto the trunk, improving on nature. Folks stopped for pictures. TV crews stopped for live reports with The Tree behind them. Christmas hype begins.

: And this evening, driving home, what do I see but snow. Snow!

: Meanwhile, Glenn Reynolds basks in Southern warmth, still. Well, we have the Christmas spirit up here, damnit.

When I went to the Century City Plaza here in West Los Angeles for lunch today, I noticed that the mall’s Christmas tree was already up and fully decorated! My coworker said that it’s been up for over a week.
Amazing. It’s as though Thanksgiving no longer exists.

NY Post reported that 102.7 has already started round-the-clock Christmas music, two weeks before LiteFM.

I don’t like it when they rush the season.
Winter Holiday Season in the NYC area used to start with Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. These days, the ‘Black Friday’ sales aspect is usually more prominant because that’s when the Fistfights in the Shopping Mall Parking Lot Season begins, too.
But I don’t like them to start too soon and then it feels like they’re rushing through some things and skipping over others.
Until Flying Mouse and then Epiphany.
A few times over the past several years, young Christians have asked me when they should take down their Christmas tree and decorations. Well, I’m the wrong person to ask, but I could give you my opinion based on traditions. They really should ask their parents.
I didn’t check the schedules yet, but if they do a Flying Mouse production in NYC this winter, who do you think will be among the guest *cameos* at the gala? My guess is: RUDOLF GUILIANI ! Yes, that’s my guess and Prediction!

For me, Christmas starts November 1. Close enough, I say.
Look, I live in Florida, where you don’t have weather, you have climate. You mutate, developing superhuman sensitivity to even barometrically insignificant drops on humidity, and when the temperature should get to near-Arctic 50F or so, the natives and gone-natives go berserk, flipping on the heaters and swaddling in sweaters.
    That’s just the weather aspect.
Sociologically speaking, why not have a season devoted to at least an attempt at “peace on earth, goodwill to men” start early and end late?
So, I’ve already played the Roches WE THREE KINGS disc, and the new NATIONAL LAMPOON CHRISTMAS VACATION DVD. I’ve sketched out the decorating plans, and committed to a real tree this year.
Decorating the tree plans come down to one over-riding aesthetic: WWKFODB? (What Will Knock Foo On His Diapered Butt?) (Foo being the World’s Greatest Grandbaby (TM))
Thanksgiving? A nice meal in the middle of the Christmas hoo-hah. And I mean “hoo-hah” in the nicest way.
I’ve even grown my beard out to Old Testamentarian lengths, hoping to score another Santa gig this year….

Is snow what that was? I was with several people from the East Coast on Thursday night, and they assured my Arizona-transplanted self that the tiny cold white flakes floating on the wind were Definitely Empirically Most Certainly Not Snow.
