: Reuters says Toronto was leaderless in the crisis:

As Canada’s biggest city struggled back to life on Friday following a massive power outage that hit large areas of North America, Toronto residents were looking around for their civic leaders.

There was a noticeable lack of leadership to guide Toronto, the country’s financial hub, as subways ground to a halt, the city was pitched into darkness and thousands were milling about downtown streets late into the night.

In contrast to New York City and Ottawa, where mayors quickly appeared at press conferences to calm residents and provided regular updates, Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman was noticeably absent.

    Mel Lastman has been a disgrace ever since he took office. Thankfully his term is up soon and new “civic leaders” are on their way.

    Mel Lastman is a monkey’s arse.
    Two full terms ago, when Lastman was supposed to be leading the forces against the amalgamation of Toronto with its surrounding municipalities into a “megacity” (one that he would become the mayor of, oddly enuf), I was sent to photography him at his office in the North York (where he’d been mayor for about a millenia). I arrived at Mel Lastman square (no kidding) and was ushered into hizzoner’s office, where he sat rather glumly – quite a change from his usual capering chimp public persona.
    I expressed the usual dismay at the “megacity” proposal, and wondered aloud, as I set up my gear, why they couldn’t restructure the city on the same lines as NYC.
    “Oh, how is New York set up?” he asked, guilelessly.
    This man, who had been a mayor for the better part of my life, didn’t know about the borough system.
    Wotta dolt.
