Cool Jews

Cool Jews
: JewsWeek has its list of cool Jewish things (unfortunately without links). Josh Marshall is No. 6. Jonah Goldberg is No. 22. And coming in at No. 45, I’m proud to say…

Christians: No, really. Christians are the Jews’ new best friends. They back us on Israel, mostly, but they’ve been kind enough to stop blaming us for killing their head honcho a while back and, for the most part, relations have been quite cozy. They still probably want to convert us, and that’s kind of a sore point, but what’s something like that between new friends?

Bah. There’s no Natalie Portman on the list. Somewhere, Ken Layne is writing an angry e-mail.

I didn’t like their list. And it had no links.
Maybe this is why I don’t get around to reading them too much. I saw about three items on their list I liked.

I think Jonah Goldberg is a Christian with Jewish ancestry. There are enough cool Jews around (like Natalie Portman) that there’s no need to borrow any from our “new best friends.”

For things like that, I often like to mentally substitute “black” or “white”. Sort of a racism filter…
For instance, just about every Jewish or Israseli site you go to has tons of ads for Jewish dating sites. Imagine what the reaction would be to a sites catering only to white people or blacks?

Yehudit: As far as I know, Jonah is half-Jewish on his father’s side, which doesn’t make him a Jew according to the Halacha, but that still makes him Jew enough to be hated by the Nazis — er, paleoconservatives.
Jeremy: There are many dating sites that cater specifically to blacks as well as Christian singles sites which are predominantly white. Allowing for people to express their preferences is not the same as discrimination.

Jeff you should be on the list, number 53B. The fact that I found out about a cool Jewish site from you is cool.

Actually, Christians want to convert everyone, not just Jews. Sort of an equal opportunity thing…

I’ve had a serious split with my best friend of high-school and college, because I converted to Judaism, and he became a Born-Again. He insists on trying to convert me and my wife, and we finally told him off after a particularly egregious event. He refuses to accept that my choice is a valid one. It’s been a real piss-off.
