Tourism Minister Stephani has resigned, noting, of course, that he “loves Germans.” Given that Germans provide 40% of Italy’s tourism revenue, I’d say that was a better late than never move.
Berlusconi’s crack to MP Schultz about being a good choice to play the part of guard was apparently a reference to Italy’s upcoming TV movie based on the comedy Hogan’s Heroes, so the crack was more a reference to MP Shultz as a bumbling stooge than as a power-crazed sadist. Few articles have pointed that out.
Also, not to excuse Berlusconi’s tasteless joke, but Shultz had just ruined his big moment–important speech on Italy’s first day at the EU presidency–by asking the Italian PM if his legal troubles made him unfit for the job; Chirac’s own deferred legal battle on corruption charges (until he leaves office) was, of course, not mentioned.
