The Ugly American

The Ugly American
: How did I miss this? The BBC held a poll and found that Homer Simpson won the title of greatest American with 40 percent of the vote, beating out Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King at 10 each; Mr. T at 8 (!) Bob Dylan at 6 (!!); Bill Clinton at 4 (!!!).

They did this for a show about America’s place in the world. I can just imagine what a lovefest that must have been. Any of our British friends see it?

So… does this poll tell us something about a) the BBC; b) the British; c) Europeans’ fascination with the products of American mass consumerism they pretend to abhor; or d) all of the above.
Maybe, after all these years, the British still can’t bring themselves to take the Colonies seriously.

It tells you nothing about the BBC except that they have joined in the obsession for online ‘polls’ on everything and anything.

    Hey Brits! Homer is Canadian!
Simpsons creator reveals Homer is Canadian
Matt Groening claims Homer Simpson is Canadian.
The character is based on The Simpsons creator’s dad – also called Homer – who was born near Winnipeg.
“I hope Canadians won’t hold it against the show now that they know,” Groening told Canadian website Jam! Showbiz.
“We were counting on Canadians feeling superior to the Simpsons as being doltish Americans but now the secret is out.”

It’s only fair. I mean, Benny Hill is my favorite Brit.
