Media consolidation that’s truly frightening

Media consolidation that’s truly frightening
: Don’t be scared that Viacom and Time Warner control half your media.

DO be scared to death that Walmart controls your media.

The news will soon be delivered by a smiley face. Nothing but good news here.

Yeah, that’s gonna scare everybody there in the Noo Yawk meedya…a Wal-Mart womens mag, directed from B’ville AK. Where are they gonna place those 4,000 articles a month about “25 Sex Moves He CRAVES!!!”?

Ooh. A Walmart magazine. Cue shrieky “Psycho” music. Don’t sniff the perfume samples! They contain mind control drugs! Soon every woman in America will leave their jobs to wear aprons and cook pies! Stepford Wives! Aaagghhh!

It seems as if you are easily frightened.

That’s odd. I logged on today and didn’t notice anyone controlling my media. I can still buy any book I want at Amazon, and the local B&N still has ’em all on the shelf as far as I can tell. The satellite service still gives me news feeds from all over the world, as well as all the usual shopping channels.
You know who controls my media? I do, by choosing who and what to read and watch. No congolomerate can ever have any measurable impact on that, because as soon as they start narrowing choices, they open up market niches for others.
Remember when the big chain bookstores were going to be the death of free choice for the book-buying public? Guess what – the book megastores have made more choices possible than any number of little corner bookstores could ever have done.
Give the anti-corporate paranoia a break already.

I thought Jeffro was being sarcastic here. Surely he’s not really worried about a magazine for female Wal-Mart customers? Jeffro?
