Baghdad Broadcasting Company

Baghdad Broadcasting Company
: I’ve been pushing for a Baghdad blog newspaper and for wi-fi’ing the country to get a free press jumpstarted in a nation that has not known freedom.

Now NZ Bear adds an good wish: a 24-hour news channel from Baghdad:

I know, I know, television is soooo old media — but teevee is where we’re losing the meme war to the Islamists and Arab nationalists who want to paint America as Evil Oppressor.

Note the approach: I don’t favor shutting down Al Jazeera. I do favor countering its messages with the perspective of an Arab people recently liberated by American military power. It is my hope their perspective will be a positive one towards the U.S. — but that’s up to them.

Agreed. It is time for media people to pitch in where possible.

this has got to be the dumbest idea ever – considering most of the country lacks water and electricity and the people are living in desperate poverty what the hell use will a wifi network and blog be?

Iraq will not be without electricity forever, for cryin’ out loud!
They already have computers and Internet access.
But at present they desperately need a print media that will help dispell all the wild rumors that currently sweeping through the streets of Baghdad. As soon as the electricity is back online we’ll probably see the rumors in print first, then eventually more reliable news.

Sigh. I didn’t say “don’t feed anyone yet, set up a TV station instead!”. One can approach these things in parallel, you know.
Full text of my comments are here, by the way.

The Iraqi channel is already in limited operation, rebroadcasting various (US) news programs – ABC, Fox, CNN, and a few others.
