I think NYC is driving their economy down the tubes with their smoking regs and bans. Many tourists from other countries smoke and will simply avoid NYC and go visit other cities instead rather than be put through this kind of ordeal. It’s going to absolutely ruin their hospitality and pub business. Some old battle ax was on the news radio one day a few months ago about this. She was from Long Island and clearly implied that they were deliberately trying to shut down the pubs on L.I. by banning smoking so their husbands wouldn’t patronize them anymore. I think that this is going to drive this country into a profound depression like the 1930’s. When they make cigarettes prohibatively expensive, people will continue to buy them, but no longer buy other discretionary goods. And that will inexorably tank the economy. I believe we are heading down into a bottomless pit because of this. Nothing will ever be enough for these nutjobs until they sink this country. They are what Rummy calls “dead-enders.” And that’s where they are taking this country.

Trapped in the white hinterland to your north, we have silently sat on our frozen butts, forced to watch this smoking ban absurdity as it snaked its way from coast to coast. Given our national timidity toward causing or supporting any conflict, our subservience to these busybody battle-axes is now complete.
Our only possible salvation has been the hope they would try it on in a city such as New York, whose citizenry still retain the balls to respond with more than the flash of an indignant middle finger. We are trusting that any resulting carnage from a suicidal attempt to drag a New Yorker away from his comfortable repose to a gonad-freezing puff in sub-zero temperatures, might bring our own society to its senses. It now appears that we will not need to wait until the deep of winter to witness this appreciation. Not for the first time, and very likely, not for the last, we are ungratefully relying on your pro-active sense of outrage to meet this latest threat to mankind’s civil liberty.
Yet, not wishing to deny the battle-axe brigade the right to try imposing their lunacy on a smoking public, I would suggest they lug their lard-arsed self-righteousness off to the apparent chain-smoking of Baghdad. There at least, they can be assured of a warm reception. -
