Saddam topples again… and again… and again….
: The favorite — already cliched — picture of war these days is the toppling (or slashing or burning or pissing-on) of craven images of Saddam Hussein. The Sueddeutsche Zeitung put together a nice slideshow of pix of Saddam falling again and again. (It’s in German but don’t worry; just click on the caption under the picture.)

i had to laugh while reading the last paragraph, it’s in english (freely translated):
“meanwhile, the crucial question isn’t answered yet. whom does the message of this iconosclasm serve? to whom is it adressed? to the iraqis? surely. but as much as to them, it’s adressed to the americans themselves, who – like the people during palaeolithicum – wish to have the booty hunted by hunting its pictures.”
i hope this makes sense, i seldom needed my dictionary that often… ;-) -
You meant “graven images”, don’t you?

i’m afraid i didn’t get the point of your reply.
the paragraph says, that some people think that destroying statues, paintings or posters of saddam hussein is just like destroying himself.
sorry if i wasn’t able to express myself properly.

It’s lovely to see all the Saddam statues down in the dust, and the photos and paintings up in flames, but I hope they don’t destroy ALL of them. Someday the Iraqi National Museum will want to do an exhibit on the horrors of Saddam’s regime, and will need a few examples of the idolatrous images of Saddam that were everywhere, making him seem omnipresent and omnipotent. It would be ironic if they had to actually recreate them.
