Blogging by example
: Let me be the 100th person to note what a great job Josh Marshall is doing with the Lott story. Note, too, that this is what blogs too best: They point you to everything worth reading on a topic (they read so you don’t have to). They emphasize speed; no paper can keep up with this as quickly as Josh can. They take advantage of interactivity (you can send a news tip to Josh and see it up online in moments; won’t happen that way at NBC Nightly News).

I beg to differ. It seems to me that Marshall has gone off the deep end with this story, and is not so much covering it as using it as an excuse to vent his personal hatred for all things Southern and conservative. His latest antics make Lott a cross-burner by linking him through about three degrees of separation to some actual cross-burners in a Supreme Court case (if they were flag burners, it would be fine, of course).
Lott’s remarks, while stupid and insensitive, weren’t clearly hateful; Marshall’s reaction exceeds Lott’s action and actually does descend to the gutter. -
The link between Lott and the CCC is well known.
Marshall points out that the CCC filed an amicus brief in support of the right to burn crosses, but also notes that in general there may be good arguments for such a right. What he takes the CCC to task for is a couple of arguments they use in that brief.
Basically, Marshall is exposing just what sort of organization the CCC is. Given Lott’s clear connection to them, it’s hardly a stretch to question why the past and future Senate Majority Leader is so willing to keep their company. -

One could say the same thing about Louis Farrakhan and any number of Democrats. Go right ahead and show that you’re motivated by a desire to end racial prejudice, not simply a desire to bash Republicans whenever and wherever you can.
