: There’s a meme spreading like wildfire a meme that notes that Spain’s 3/11 came 911 days after America’s 9/11. But Jill does her homework:

Symbolism and patterns combined really get to me. I’d already noted that March 11 was exactly 2 1/2 years after September 11, but when the front page of the paper this morning said it was also exactly 911 days after 911, I almost decided to stay put in quiet Bergen (preferably with my head under my doona) for the rest of my life.

Luckily I’m a web-surfing fact-checking blogger at heart and it didn’t take long before I realised that most papers aren’t reporting this. Some that Google say report it no longer do by the time you follow the link. I guess they quietly deleted their errors. We had a leap year. So it was 912 days. I even double checked that with a calculator.

Insanely enough this makes me feel a lot safer.

: UPDATE from the comments: Olivier counted and there are 911 days between the events; it didn’t occur 911 days after 9/11.

Still sounds like the work of a sick, albeit incompetent mind.

Even if it were 911 days, the date 9-11 in the parts of the world where these bastards come from corresponds to November 9.
911 days really wouldn’t of much significance to a numerologically inclined terrorist, although 119 days might have been.
In any case, God bless the dead, wounded and their families.

It’s also presuming that they counted right.

  • Dave

Could it be 912 days because of the added day in leap year? A profoundly sad calculation none the less.

  • SamAm

Leap years are obviously an American-Zionist plot designed to, well, the terrorists aren’t quite sure.

Not to make fun in the midst of such a tragedy but to have newspaper reporters/editors within 1.5 days out of 1,000 days is 1,000 times better than this quote from a WA state paper a few days ago,

There’s no limit to the symbolism we humans can read into an event after the fact. Whether the day was March 11th or Friday the 13th or 911,911 minutes after 9-11 doesn’t change the tragedy.

Note that when you realize it’s actually 912 days, the whole hoopla over 911 days become even more silly. And a 2.5 year anniversary is beyond silly, numerology run amok. And as Evan points out, calling it “nine-eleven” is an Americanism, and America is the Great Satan, so such a term would not be used.
Finally, unlike Judiasm and Christianity with their saint’s days and holy days and such, the tradition of anniversaries is not as strong in Islam, because of the nature of the lunar calendar. But I would expect that if there’s going to be an anniversary attack, it would occur on the same date as the original one– 22 Jumada al Thani. Which this year will be 09 August.

stop ruining my dreams! i want to think that they planned it 911 days after 9/11, but forgot about the leap year. hehe. stupid terrorists. alright, maybe not, but can’t i keep my delusions for a little while?

If the Madrid tragedy is linked to America’s 9/11, it could be that the perpetrators are too ignorant of the Western calendar to count correctly. If it is just an unhappy coincidence, no matter. The true fact is unimaginable atrocity, sheer murder for murder’s sake. May God damn the perpetrators for all eternity. If ETA did this, so be it. They have murdered their own cause. If al-Qaeda did it, we are already in the process of dismembering their cause, autopsy to follow. If they partnered, in order to further their causes, may they enjoy Hell together. Civilization will prevail.

  • I tested the “911 days” claim with a short Python script before stumbling upon this post. There was an art exhibit that opened on March 9 that also alleged to follow 911 days after 9/11 – it was even called “911 Days”.
Turns out that neither 3/9 nor 3/11 are actually 911 days after 9/11.

  • I counted, there are 911 days *between* the two events. Might be some sick plan to increase the irrational level of fear created by these murders, since fear is by definition the goal of terrorism.

Updated: 6:44 p.m. ET March 12, 2004March 12 – What started off as a typical weekday commute to work ended in a hell of twisted metal, shattered glass and broken bodies Thursday morning. *Exactly 911 days after September 11, 2001,..*
I wish I had his job–no fact checking necessary, just say “exactly” and you sound like you have the authority to make this pronouncement.
