Google’s assault on local continues

Google Maps just added the ability for consumers to add reviews to businesses, on top of the many review sources (such as Yelp) that Google had already licensed. If Google becomes the repository for reviews — because it’s Google — that’s significant competition to local efforts, like the Washington Post’s Local Explorer. I think we’re going to see a lot more use of maps as another entry into information locally. (via Steve Rubel)

Map aps

Just found what looks like a very nice map ap for news organizations. Sky is using it and they’ve already caught a criminal via a map. More about it from the creator, Simon Dickson, here.

See also WashingtonPost.com’s really superb local explorer map ap, displaying businesses, home sales, schools (not sure why), and crime (I see the fine hand of Adrian Holovaty).

: Correction. Adrian, in the comments, says he had nothing to do with the Post’s local explorer. Except he has inspired all of us to think mappy.
