The kidnap weapon spreads its deadly cancer

The kidnap weapon spreads its deadly cancer

: Danny Pearl was kidnapped and beheaded in Pakistan. Foreigners of many countries and jobs are being kidnapped and held for ransom of all sorts and killed in Iraq.

Now a CNN producer has been kidnapped in Gaza.

I fear this weapon of terrorism will spread everywhere.

  • Hunter McDaniel

    This weapon (kidnapping) will continue to spread as long as it continues to be rewarding. My own (hopeful) opinion is that this will not be too much longer. Media coverage is the fuel which makes it rewarding, but the whole script – outrageous demands with deadlines, tearful pleas by the relatives, snuff video by the terrorists – has lost its novelty. The public is already starting to tune this out.

  • Franky

    Kidnapping will spread because it is so effective and so cheap. All you really need is to learn the template, and then it becomes easy.Not all targets can adquaetly protect themselves all the time. Check out Colombia’s horrendous history of kidnapping to see how a country can become victim of this phenomena (2,000 kidnapped last year alone)

  • http://chervokas.typepad.com chervokas

    Kidnapping as a means of political coersion isn’t spreading, it’s always been with us, in Italy w/ the Red Brigade, in Beruit in the 1980s, in Colombia last year.

  • http://hippercritical.typepad.com Glenn

    i agree with chervokas. kidnappings may be sensational and relatively cheap, but it’s absolutely disastrous for the cause, where the long-term goal is to draw the sympathy of world opinion. i think this will backfire for hamas, if this cnn producer isn’t released soon.

  • O’McSomething

    Well, I my vote is for splodydopes over kidnapping. If Cheney can say a vote for Kerry could mean that we could get hit like 9/11 again, I say a vote for Bush means splodydopes over here. Call me crazy.

  • BigFire

    They pick a perfect mark. This is not about politics nor terrorism, but money. Who can CNN turn to for help? PLO (who want their cut of the eventual ransom), Hamas (who also want their cut of the money), IDF (whom CNN loathes, and would rather let the producer die before gravelling before the occupiers). Bottom line, CNN may want to up their kidnapping insurance, which will make them an even bigger target.

  • Harry in Atlanta

    And here I was thinking that CNN was sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Well so much for favorable coverage to protect your sources and yourselves, eh CNN. That said I certainly hope this person is released unharmed and the perpertrators are harmed. Enough is enough.

  • Kat

    Cnn will likely pay millions and then the guy will go on air telling the world how well he was treated by the militant terrorists. Could this be a setup? Is this guy a muslim? This scum is laughing at us. They should be hunted down and killed, not negotiated with. Find their ratholes and give them a daisy.
    From Scotland on Sunday:
    This does not seem to bother the hostage-takers. They began taunting Western governments over their efforts to seek their citizens

  • Franky

    Yeah Kat it’s a setup. I hear the decapitation was actually Pearl’s own suggestion.
    I doubt this is for money, rather the kidnapping in Gaza will be to bring attention to the kidnappers’ demands.
    The sad fact is that I’m surprised kidnapping has not taken off more in conflcited countries given how effective it is.

  • Walter E. Wallis

    The obvious solution is to deny kidnappers what they want, publicity. Pass a law that any publication of kidnapper demands while the kidnapping is going on is felony abetting of that crime, and mean it.
    After everything is over let them Ofrah their hearts out, but shut up while it is in progress.

  • Kat

    Pearl’s only fault was being a Jew. This guy is an Arab. How effective is it? It just makes the scum more despicable with each new case. Makes one want to give this kind of subhuman a terrorist state, does it? I used to want that–no more–I want Israel to remain a Jewish state with no right of return for terrorist scum like Hamas. it is absurd for anyone other than Jews to be citizens in the first place!

  • Kat

    Oops-Should say:
    ~~~~with no possibility that muslims will ever become the majority.
  • ronbo
    My heart goes out to this man and his family, but you have to wonder whether CNN is reaping what they sowed.
  • http://blogs.rny.com/sbw/ sbw
    After George Bush’s April 13, 2004, press conference we wrote an editorial that concluded:
    “Like a magnifying glass, what is under the lens of the media appears clearer but that distorts its relationship with the rest of the map. Political candidates and those fighting against the coalition in Iraq and Afghanistan will try to use the media lens to win you over. That’s why the American public needs to be extra careful during the current war and political campaign.
    “Senator Kerry may have a plan for getting us out of Iraq, but he needs to convey that he understands what it is we are fighting for in Iraq. In a column this morning in the Washington Post:, “A Strategy for Iraq”, Kerry said “Our country is committed to help the Iraqis build a stable, peaceful and pluralistic society. No matter who is elected president in November, we will persevere in that mission.”
    “Does Kerry understand that because of the media, viewers are frontline soldiers in the war on terror? Insurgents in Iraq are fighting to undermine the will of the viewers to continue to fight.
    “Can Kerry explain why Iraq was chosen as one theater in the war on terror? Bush explained his reasons Tuesday night.
    “Can Kerry explain why “internationalization” through the U.N., a path he prefers, would work now when it met resistance in January and February of 2003?
    “Both sides have a lot to do in a complicated world in terms of conveying to the public their vision of a future while at the same time, steeling voters to face their responsibilities in a violent world.”
  • Faramin
    Kat,
    The way you always generalize muslims and call them terrorist, if somebody had done the same about Jews, s/he would be right a way called anti-simetic, and if possible, put in jail for spreading hatred. But you, you can say whatever the F. you want and none of your like-minded people in here, would object that.
    You are truly suffering from hatred. How do you live with your pitty existance? You are so small and so empty. I truly feel sorry for your with this sick mentality of yours.
  • Kat
    I do hate anyone who kidnaps innocents and beheads them. I hate them with a hate I never knew existed. When I see another innocent beheaded that hate grows. I feel sorry for people like you who excuse the beheaders.
    Good article for you Faramin–describes you to a T….the follower. It is yourself you should feel sorry for.
    {A movement that draws its foot soldiers from people who dream of beheading one of us is clearly a barbarous phenomenon, one that puts the lie to the notion that our enemies in this terror war are human beings driven to desperation by misery and injustice. Not at all: The recruiting films are aimed at subhuman homicidal maniacs who revel in bloody brutality. Given the human capacity to rationalize most any ghastly behavior, some of the killers’ supporters
  • Franky
    Kat your ignorance of the middle east is becoming an obstacle to any conversation. If anyone has a grievance, it is not the Israelis. Seriously, flame away, but I’m so tired of this ignorance about the palestinian-Israeil conflict I have niether the inclination nor the need to explain it to people who get their history from Fox news or CNN.
  • http://twistedspinster.com/ Andrea Harris
    “If anyone has a grievance, it is not the Israelis.”
    Yeah, so their kids and grandmas get blown up every now and then by Palestinian suicide killers over political grievances, so what?
    Ooh, sorry. Mustn’t be snarky.
  • HE
    Yes what possible grievance cd the Israeli’s have? Just having to defend their nation from vicious attacks since 48, and having to deal with terrorists murdering children at pizza parlors and passover seders, as well as the international communities sanctimonious spewings while she buries her dead, what possible grievance cd those filthy jews have?
  • Captain America
    How interesting: Faramin has said on other blogs that the kidnappees deserve their fate. After all they are part of the occupation, thus the kidnappers are in their right to kidnap, hold and murder anyone they can get their hands on.
    Right Faramin? Or do i need to link where you said exactly this on your buddy Rubert McMoron’s website?
  • Kat
    Oh, Franky, don’t be obtuse. I just have to read the PLO charter and realize Israel has a genuine grievance. I also know that some 80% Pals support this crap.
    THE PLO CHARTER:
    1. Through the “armed struggle” (i.e., terrorism), to establish an “independent combatant national authority” over any territory that is “liberated” from Israeli rule. (Article 2)
    2. To continue the struggle against Israel, using the territory of the national authority as a base of operations. (Article 4) (That means getting a terrorist state in the area as a base-to infiltrate a region like they did us on 911 so they can jihad)
    3. To provoke an all-out war in which Israel’s Arab neighbors destroy it entirely (“liberate all Palestinian territory”). (Article 8) (That means annihiliate the Jews)
    The PLO emblem, like that of other Palestinian terrorist groups, displays a map of all of the State of Israel — not just those areas administered by Israel since 1967. (That means they have aspirations to muslimize Israel)
    Though the PLO claims that it recognizes Israel’s right to exist and wants to found a state only in Gaza and the West Bank, its official stationery, bearing its official emblem, betrays its true goals. As PLO officials have indicated repeatedly, the organization has designs on conquering all of Israel. These aims have been incorporated into the PLO Charter and the PLO’s “phased plan” for Israel’s destruction. (And they thank stool pigeons as yourself for helping them).
    I refuse to sacrifice Jews to these terrorists.
  • Tony Alva
    This is probably the worst opportunity to post this comment since it’s point will probably get lost amongst those who want to push the discussion into corners, but here goes:
    Where is the Islamic worlds outrage? Can anyone point to a high profile instance of the moderate Muslim world’s outrage at these bombings, kidnappings, and beheadings? I may not be as big of a media/news junkie as Jarvis, but I do read and watch a hell of a lot of local and world press and I have yet to see anything that resembles the outrage that these atrocities surely warrant. The fact that these acts are carried out in the name of what the moderates refer to as their religion of peace should have them marching in the streets, yet the streets are quiet. I think this is why the free world is so skeptical of Islam in general and why many believe that most Muslims tacitly support these activities. From a non-Muslim
    UPDATE: The CNN Producer was released. No surprise to me.
  • Faramin
    Captain America,
    Faramin has said on other blogs that the kidnappees deserve their fate. After all they are part of the occupation, thus the kidnappers are in their right to kidnap, hold and murder anyone they can get their hands on.
    I didn’t know that you in addition to not being intelligent, are also a liar. Yes, please me make ashamed of what you accuse me of saying, or be ashamed of your cheap and idiotic comment. YES, PROVIDE THE LINK.
    When people have nothing to say, they just start lying. Show me where I said what you say I said or go die for being so cheap. I don’t even expect an apology from you. I don’t even give you enough value to consider your apology.
  • Faramin
    Captain America,
    I never believed anyone deserves to die, even a low-life liar like you. I am not for death. You are. After all, it is you and your leaders who have caused tens of thousands of deaths around the world during just last couple of years.
    Don’t forget to link to where I said this. You said you could,. Please do. I’m excited in seeing your humiliated AGAIN by me. After all, the person who doesn’t have enough integrity to state the truth, deserves to be humiliated. And that is what I’ve been doing with you for quite some time and I will gladly continue doing so.
  • Kat
    Don’t fret, Faramin, lots of other muslims hold that view–even the most respected(by muslims, not me) clerics.
    {Basim Ghozlan, the manager at Det Islamske Forbundet, one of the largest Muslim organizations in Norway, stated that suicide bombers are accepted if they kill enemies.
  • Faramin
    Kat,
    Although I’ve said so many times, that I do not speak as a Muslim, as I am not one, you are STILL refering to me as a Muslim and bring up quotes from some other Muslims to undermine my position.
    I have a suggestion for you: get a life, A real one.
  • kat
    Sure, Faramin, I’ll go to afghan.chat or whatever and bash Jews like you do. Then I can have a miserable life like you–blaming others for my plight.
  • Faramin
    Kat,
    Go wherever the hell you want. Unlike you who has nothing to say but bashing Muslims, I don’t bash Jews. My problem is with Zionism not Judaism. And your arrogant attitude shows that YOU ARE part of the zionism idealogy.
  • Faramin
    Captain America,
    Where are you hiding? What happened to the link you were goping to provide where I have allegedly said that “the kidnappees deserve their fate. After all they are part of the occupation, thus the kidnappers are in their right to kidnap, hold and murder anyone they can get their hands on.“?
    I don’t expect and accept an apology from you, but you might consider offering one to other readers to whom you lied about me. Obvioudly I am not including low lives suchg as Kat in that group.
    Are you ashamed of your exposed cheater attitude? Where is the link? You said you would provide it. Where is it?
  • Kat
    My problem is with islamism not islam. And your arrogant attitude shows that YOU ARE part of the islamofascist idealogy.
    And you are a liar if you say you have never bashed Jews, but you do that well don’t you. Get all bent out of shape when I criticize the muslims for condoning jihad and all that crap, but yet you just content yourself with writing anti-Semitic bile against “Jews” and excuse your hatefilled bile by contending you don’t mean Jews. Who are these fellow ‘countrymen’ you refer to in some of your posts–fellow terrorists? Anyways, I don’t mean muslims–I mean terrorists who praise allah.
  • Faramin
    Kat,
    You are just like your friend Captain America; you are a liar.
    Yeah, I have said many things against the criminal regime of Israel. I don’t hide it. I don’t deny it. But why should I be agianst Jews? After all, some of the best activists of the world are Jews. Some of the people with highest integrity and dignity are Jews (Obviously that does not include you). Also, there are many Jews who are NOT Zionist and some of them are even anti-Zionist. How about trying this one?
  • Kat
    Yeah, when you said “screw the Jews” you never meant Jews.
    Zionism is not a threat to world peace, islamism,AKA terrorism, is. Do you say anything against the criminal regimes of Syria, Sudan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, the
    killing of Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir by terrorists,etc. Why have I never heard you say anything against these sadistic slime?
    Islamic torture deaths(terrorisn) have been brought about by such inhuman practices as:Strangulation by using steel wires, Hanging, Impaling,Branding with hot irons, Burning alive, Lynching, Bleeding to death,Gouging out of vital organs and cheering as victim dies as his guts fall to the ground, cutting off legs and making victim run on stumps till he drops dead,Dismemberment of Human bodies, cutting open pregnant women and killing the babies, debreasting, rape, Drowning alive.
    Terrorists have frequently indulged in barbaric acts like performing ‘death dances’ after killing their target. Are they the fellow countrymen you speak of? I know the koran teaches Jew hatred, so your deep hate for Jews does not surprise me.
  • http://www.buzzmachine.com Jeff Jarvis
    Faramin, Kat…
    Please take it outside!
  • Faramin
    Respecting Jeff’s wishes, I will not respond to the comment directed towards me.
  • http://www.buzzmachine.com Jeff Jarvis
    Faramin: Thank you very much.
  • Franky
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1316169,00.html
    To get slightly back on track: these kidnappers are obviously evolving their tactics regarding kidnapping.
    As a point of curiosity, I wonder if our societies will be able to harden themselves to such an extent that we can endure this form of public torture and refuse to negotiate with these terrorists.
  • Captain America
    Go to myblagh.blogspot, one Robert McClennand’s website, and scroll around the posts (there are not that many since few go to such a crackpots site).
    There you will see Faramin’s statement that these people (the kidnapped and murdered) have it coming to them. I asked Mr Faramin if then it is OK to rape woman who are drinking and wearing slutty clothes, but he didn’t respond.
    Ah Faramin: Terror supporting, liar and a coward — what a way to go thru life.
  • Captain America
    Well just went to grab Faramin’s direct quote blaming the kidnapees for their fate and it appears that Robert deleted all of his archived comments.
    How convenient for you Faramin. Send any $$ to Hamas recently?
  • franky
    If it’s convenient for anyone, it sounds like it’s for you Captain America.
  • Captain America
    Well Franky, you can go to any number of sites that Faramin posts to, read his views and then determine if what i say he wrote fits with his other opinions.
    I know what the answer to that is. Do you?
  • Captain America
    Found it – shorter Faramin – terrorism, kidnapping? Blame the US, not the murderers.
    Regarding the killing of the American, It is all the responsibility of the occupation, as if there was no occupation, these religious fundamentalists would not be in Iraq today. they are all over the country now. You have allowed them to grow. It is you and your stupidity that has gavin them room to grow. But still, it is NOT you who pays the price for it. It is the ordinary secular civilians (particularly Iraqis) who will pay the price. Unfortunaltely, you can still open your big mouth as wide as an elephant’s ass, while sipping onto your coffee cup.
    Faramin | 09.21.04 – 10:27 am
  • Faramin
    Jeff,
    Respectfully, I will remain polite but I wish to respond to this accusation from Captain America. You can, however, delete my response if you wish although you have allowed Captain America’s accusation remain:
    Captain America:
    I do not deny that I have shown no respect for you as I don’t have any, but as I’ve said it to you at Robert’s blog, it was only in response to your complete disregard of Robert’s right to express himself in his own blog. You NEVER missed using the F word and insulting Robert and then me, when you left comments there. You just received back what you sent to me, perhaps harsher though.
    You really could not come up with anything to back your accusation against me, could you? You know why? Because it doesn’t exist. AND YOU KNOW THAT. I never feel good from death of people regardless of who they are. To me, death is not something to celebrate.
    You did however, bring in something from many things that I’ve said, but that is not what you accused me of. Read it again: I am accusing the US of causing the growth of fundamentalism. I am accusing the US of participating and creating the conditions for all these atrocities. and yes, I say, that people like me will pay the price not the Americans. I stand by what I’ve said 100%. But that is not what you accused me of saying. I am still waiting for a link to show my excitment of beheading of the Americans.
    (At blogspot, many of the old comments, will not appear in terms of the number of comments on particular post, but they do still exist. You have to click on the “Comments” to see them. However, I believe every newer comment automatically delets the oldest comment on the blog, if the blog is not Upgrade blog that is – And about Robert: I see enough integrity in Robert that he does not delet ANY comment. Just read the insulting comments directed to him in his blog, he hasn’t even deleted them. I have not seen any blogger with the patience of Robert).
    Yes, I still say, if there was no occupation, there would not be as much death as there is now. There would not be so much recrits for the fundamentalis. There would not be so much growth of fundamentalism. Do you see this as condoning the beheading of the Americans or Brits?
    Yes, I have said many things, but NEVER, NEVER celebrated the death of ANY individual.
  • Captain America
    Jeff – I won’t waste your bandwidth arguing with a terror supporter on your site.
  • Kat
    {and yes, I say, that people like me will pay the price not the Americans.} And who exactly are people like you? I know you are not an American–but I’d like to know what you are–who are these fellow countrymen of yours?
