Who are the bastards?

Who are the bastards?
: Netzeitung reports that according to the Spanish secret service, 15 Islamists are behind the Madrid bombings. They say they are “99 percent certain.” This from a Spanish radio report.

: And from Norway:

Norwegian defence researchers have come across documents that may link Al-Qaeda to the Madrid train bombings that have claimed nearly 200 lives, Norwegian TV reported this week .

The researchers, who specialise in digging up original Al-Qaeda releases and interviews, told the NRK television channel they discovered a document on an Arabic website last year outlining Al-Qaeda strategies on how to force the US and its allies to leave Iraq, and pointing to Spain as the “weakest link”.

“It wasn’t until yesterday when we were going through old material to find links to Spain that we understood what we were holding in our hands,” project leader Brynjar Lia told NRK.

“We mainly had the impression that the documents referred to the situation in Iraq, but on closer examination we saw that they specifically refer to Spanish domestic politics and the elections due today,” he added.

According to the TV report, page 42 of the Arabic document reads: “We have to make use of the election to the maximum. The governement at the most can cope with three attacks.”

The document also reportedly predicts that the other partners in the US-led coalition would follow like “pieces of domino” if Spain were to withdraw from Iraq.

Don’t give the bastards an inch.

: UPDATE: Three from Morocco and two from India arrested in the bombings.

: UPDATE: Spanish bloggers post on Tim Blair that a tape has been found with Al Qaeda taking credit/blame for the bombings.

: From The Observer:

The Madrid bombings which killed 200 people were dramatically claimed by the Islamic militant group al Qaeda early on Sunday morning [UK time].

The Interior Minister Angel Acebes said police had recovered a videotape. ‘It’s a claim made by a man in Arabic with a Moroccan accent,’ he said. ‘He makes the declaration in the name of someone who says he is the military spokesman of al- Qaeda in Europe.’

The man on the tape says: ‘We declare our responsibility for what happened in Madrid exactly two-and-a-half years after the attacks on New York and Washington. This is an answer to the crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. If your injustices do not stop there will be more if god wills it.’

  • Mike G

I’ve already seen a couple of people (not in Spain) say that this is a blow to Aznar’s party and will make Spain’s voters repudiate his support for Bush.
As a result I suspect the Spanish are about to vote overwhelmingly in favor of taking the fight to the bastards wherever they are. Slowly, even old Europe will come around and realize this is everyone’s fight for liberty and civilization.

  • capt joe

Glenn Reynolds points out an interesting thing. Absolutely no response from John Kerry on Madrid.
So is John looking to see which way the nuance is blowing today?

  • Jeff B.

Man, I worry. This is, given al-Qaeda’s limited resources, the best move they could make. Let’s hope the Spaniards can’t be split away from the coalition by terror. Let’s hope the anger we saw yesterday stays with them, and that they don’t vote in the Socialists (I believe that’s the opposition party) and break away.
I get worried about these things.

  • onecent

…..outlining Al-Qaeda strategies on how to force the US and its allies to leave Iraq, and pointing to Spain as the “weakest link”.
They have tipped their hand. I wonder what AQ will pull off here in the fall hoping to get Kerry into the White House and a sure withdraw from Iraq? Horrifying. Possible? You bet.

  • scott orrell

    OT
I’m confused about people (democratic Undergound, or Moscow tabloids, for example) who say this is blowback from Spain’s support of the Iraq War. Is there some evidence, or even a credible question, of whether Iraqis set the bombs? It seems the idea that what we did in Iraq pissed off the enemy, Islamic fundamentalists largely outside Iraq. And this is the danger? Pissing off the enemy is a bad thing? Why?
If Iraqis did not set bombs nor endorse them why should this be set on their shoulders?

  • scott orrell

If an Iraqi terrorist group had done this– then there may be a case for Aznar’s fault. But is there really any chance of that being true?

  • Trump

The document also reportedly predicts that the other partners in the US-led coalition would follow like “pieces of domino” if Spain were to withdraw from Iraq.
Don’t give the bastards an inch.

According to drudge, about 1000 useful Spanish idiots protested today for that exact same thing. When will people wake up and smell the coffee?
This isn’t about Bush, or Iraq anymore. It’s about fighting animals- animals who think nothing of blowing innocent people up for their own twisted ends. If the Spanish give in to the terrorists now, do they think that will make the terrorists go away? What happens when the terrorists want to make Spain an Islamic republic under Sharia law? Think they’ll hesitate to blow up a few more trains, given how they know that the people will give in to them? Too many hatefilled and ignorant people in Europe still don’t understand what the real battle lines are.
I fear that many more will have to die in Europe before they wake up.
Innocents destroyed, trains turned into charnel houses because Spain supported Iraq? DO Spanish antiwar people really want to give the terrorists that legitimacy? That Spain DESERVED what happened? HOW CAN THEY EVEN ENTERTAIN SUCH THOUGHTS??

    Shut up, Robert.

  • Trump

Translation: Kerry should hurry up and say something so I can twist his words around.
Translation: For someone who wants to be a world leader, Kerry NEEDS to at least speak out and show some sympathy to the Spanish.
My theory: Aznar isn’t one of the leaders that Kerry says endorses him, so he couldn’t care less about Spain

  • Charlie (Colorado)

It hurts me to defend Kerry, but in fact he does say something about it and Glenn brings it up on InstaPundit.
Whether “bring them to justice” is an adequate response is another question, but Kerry did respond.

Trump, we have the lame and silly here entertaining stupid thoughts after 9/11……..the root cause fools(we’re rich, they are poor, we deserved it), the all-cultures-are-equal fools(jihad can’t mean what is means) and unilateral-is-bad fools(must have French and UN permission to avenge our own citizen’s mass murder).

You’re kidding, right? I live in NYC and I saw the “we deserved it” crowd in action….and in the media.

    > saw the “we deserved it” crowd in action….and in the media.
Cite one. And I mean a real one. Not some quote that takes a Herculean effort to spin into a quote that says America deserved it. And not one from some extremist barking moonbat or Islamic nutjob either.

  • onecent

Well aren’t you just the cleverest little fellow. Tell me, did the liberal voices in your head tell you to do it?
Robert, I want you to sit, take your hands off the keyboard, remove all sharp objects from your desk, and after I make my admission, calmly phone the Canadian equivalent of 911 or at least a close friend………LIBERAL voices commanded me to entrap you. I swear I was an unwitting tool in their hands. But, perhaps you can share with us why the liberals used me to entrap you as the site pest?

  • Edmonton

I’m one of the liberal voices who commanded you. I’m even Canadian! Thank you for doing my bidding. Trust me, we don’t particularly care for his stupidity here, either. BTW, we have 911, too.

The Europeans failed to Connect the Dots!!!

Cite one. And I mean a real one. Not some quote that takes a Herculean effort to spin into a quote that says America deserved it. And not one from some extremist barking moonbat or Islamic nutjob either
Fine. I was wandering in Union Square Park (it’s not that far from the village) and an impromptu memorial to the victims had turned into a good old fashioned protest movement, festooned with loads of that “we deserved it” sh*t on every available sidewalk and fence space, not to mention the throng of aging and wanna-be hippies with their signs.
So don’t even dare to suggest I’m making it up. Also, the plethora of “why do they hate us” handwringing going around in the media almost immediately after it happened, acting like the terrorists had some legitimate beef with us, still offends me to this day. So those are facts. If you don’t like it, too damn bad….but they are the FACTS

  • Edmonton

I’ve got another one. This is an excerpt from Time Magazine, Canadian Edition (which is no different save for a few ads here and there from your version – the link has since died but I saved the text because I was so shocked:
    Time Magazine
    Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003; 2.09 p.m. GMT
It was a cozy, intimate dinner party for some of Brussels’ leading lights, held
at the home of one of the city’s premier architects. Leonard Schrank, the
American chief executive of the financial services firm Swift and president of
the American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium, took a seat next to an elegant
woman he recognized as one of Belgium’s richest people. During the pre-dinner
chitchat in a room full of museum-quality contemporary art, she ventured
offhandedly that it was “good that the Americans got hit on Sept. 11. Maybe it
    taught them a lesson.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Schrank responded. “More than 3,000
people died!” The woman wilted under his assault, but for Schrank the moral of
the story was clear. “She was just repeating what she had heard,” he says. “The
real point is that 90% of the people she talks to every day would agree with
    her.”
The Brussels woman may belong to Europe’s upper crust, but these days it seems
that every social stratum on the Continent is seized by fear and loathing of
the U.S. Hundreds of thousands march through the capitals of Europe to denounce
the looming American-led war against Iraq, hanging George W. Bush in effigy and
burning Old Glory as they go. But fierce opposition to the prospect of war is
merely the latest catalyst for anti-U.S. feeling; ask a European about America
and you’re likely to get an earful about American cultural and economic
domination, American arrogance, American insularity, American blindness to
global warming, world poverty and the plight of the Palestinians.
Hating the States is a growth industry across Europe, with best-selling books
like L’Effroyable Imposture (The Horrifying Fraud) in France and Why Do People
Hate America? in Britain. The anti-American movement even has an American
mascot: social critic Michael Moore, whose latest movie (Bowling for
Columbine), book (Stupid White Men) and one-man stage show all toss
poison-tipped darts at the red-white-and-blue target ? and are all doing
brisk business in Europe. “Anti-Americanism in Europe,” says a senior U.S.
diplomat, “is creeping apace.” As the military buildup continues against Iraq
? without any obvious casus belli found by the weapons inspectors ? “people
are getting especially twitchy,” says a British official.

  • Edmonton

Q.E.D. Remember this, my southern neighbors. While I have my problems with you, I am an ardent fan – no true liberal is anything but. I’m talking FDR liberal here, not the post-modern “liberals” who’ve stained the name.
As for the entrapped pest, there are, unfortunately, many who think like him. He’s repellant, and I hope for his sake under the age of 16, because the alternative (that someone of mature age would be so self-loathing as to simply drop message bombs without any reason other than to get attention) is too sad.

  • Edmonton

By the way, I hope “entrapped pest” gains common usage. It’s perfect.

  • capt joe

Too many liberal voices, not enough keyboard time. eh Robert ;)
Yes, it appears Kerry has spoken. Good for him.

I’m not sure what’s going on in the minds of these groups, whoever they are. Do they think we are all Liberals?

  • http://myblahg.blogspot.com Robert McClelland

I see none of you can come up with a credible cite of someone saying that America deserved 9/11. And no Trump, your observations are not credible since there is no way for anyone to determine if you are accurately reporting what you saw. And no Edmonton, your article where some numbnuts quotes an alleged conversation doesn’t count either. It’s simply not credible. So either cite an actual person saying America deserved 9/11 or admit that you are full of it.

  • http://myblahg.blogspot.com Robert McClelland

    >Oh and the blame Aznar for his actions is alive at http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/006146.php
    They are not blaming Aznar for the bombings, they are blaming him for covering up the truth about the bombings. From your cite;
The theme of their demonstration was that the Spanish government is “hiding the truth about the bombings.”
See, this is a perfect example of how you right whingers distort reality.

  • hen

bobby you are so incredibly stupid that if you didn’t exist the “right whingers” would have to make you up as an example of the idiocy on the left.
    so let’s sum up:
little bobby the mental midget believes that:
    Bush is a homphobe;
    The NRA supports terrorism;
    No one ever said the US deserves 9/11;
oh and there was one other pathetically stupid one today.
why don’t you start a blog of your own and spew your absolute idiocy there? mm’kay?
oh and to your question about cite one place where it was said America deserved 9/11 — fine: Le Monde 9/12 read the ENTIRE article asshole.

  • Sortelli

You mean you’ve not yet seen the towering pinnacle of ignorance and froth that is Robert’s blog, hen?

  • Jeff B.

    Robert -
Pathetic. Edmonton cites TIME F**KING MAGAZINE and you dismiss it as “not credible.” Why? Because you don’t wish it to be credible, that’s all. Lame. On what grounds do you dismiss it? Was the author making it up? Better yet, was Edmonton fabricating the article out of whole cloth? I for one have spoken to many Europeans (I travel in such circles) who have expressed identical thoughts, sometimes more diplomatically, sometimes less. But I’m probably lying too, right? Right.
Edmonton, thanks for posting, and furthermore I appreciate sane liberalism of your stripe. We disagree on any number of issues, no doubt, but good God, at least we agree on the basic worth of my country. Unlike Bobby Mac.

  • http://myblahg.blogspot.com Robert McClelland

    >Edmonton cites TIME F**KING MAGAZINE and you dismiss it as “not credible.
Edmonton cites a ridiculous “I was talking to a liberal friend of mine” story. Yeah, right. That writer for Time is a bald faced liar. The incident never happened, he made it up.
And I still note that none of you right whingers have come up with a quote from a liberal who said America deserved it. If so many have said it, as you all claim, then it really shouldn’t be a problem citing one. Could it be that when you do a google search for such a quote, all you come up with are sites to right whingers who claim liberals have said it? The answer to that is yes.
Put up or shut up, freepers.

  • Edmonton

He made it up, huh? Wow. We’re through the looking glass here, people. I must leave before the Rand Corporation finds me . . .

  • http://twistedspinster.com/ Andrea Harris

See? Robert has to be correct because he typed it and look! it appeared right here in the comments box. And he uses “right whingers” and “freepers” all the time which of course proves he is right and everyone else is wrong! Robert, how should we pray to you? Do you like to be referred to as “My Lord the Christ Robert” or will a simple “Dear Lord Robert” do?
Robert McClelland is the True Messiah

BTW, my fellow Canuck, I seem to recall someone bearing your moniker fervently denying that the “Iraqi bloggers” were in fact not Iraqi. You were subsequently shown good, admissible evidence (under both the Canada Evidence Act and the Federal Rules of Evidence, mind you – yes, I’m an attorney) and neither issued a “retraction” nor apologized for insulting people brave enough to express themselves in a substantially less comfortable and protected environment (face it, we’re safe up here because of the U.S., whether you want to admit it or not).
Thus, you’re “put up or shut up” blathering rings incredibly hollow.

  • Edmonton

oops – “you’re” should be “your” – I’m so ashamed.

  • Edmonton

I’m guessing that my Canadian citizenship will be questioned anon by the entrapped pest. Suffice it to say that I loathe American beer, I feel that your country is being patently unfair in the logging dispute, and, most tellingly, I find curling thrilling.
My apologies to the rest of you, as only another Canadian will know what the hell I’m talking about in the last one (or some fringe faux-curler from Wisconsin).

  • http://myblahg.blogspot.com Robert McClelland

Listen, freepers. Some guy saying that somebody said America deserved it is not even remotely close to a quote of somebody actually saying it.
So either provide a direct quote of a liberal saying that America deserved it or admit that you’re all nothing more than a pack of liars.

  • Edmonton

Does pointing out that someone is a last word freak make you a last word freak?

  • http://myblahg.blogspot.com Robert McClelland

I see it’s still nothing but lies from you right whingers. I suppose next you’ll be accusing me of posting in every single thread.

I guess it doesn’t make you a last word freak to posit whether someone is a last word freak :)
Care to answer the question about the Iraq bloggers, seeing as no one else is still beating this dead horse?
